The wandering career of Marty Banks is set to start another chapter, but he has his eye on one last family hit-out.

Banks came back to the Highlanders in what is his third stint with the franchise this year. He was seen as a mentor for young first five-eighths Josh Ioane and Bryn Gatland, but has ended up getting a decent chunk of playing time.

He broke his foot mid-season which put him out for more than a month, but he is still a vital part of the side, thanks to his educated right boot.

''I just love being part of the team,'' Banks (29) said.

''Every year I have been here we have been part of the playoffs and it is just an exciting time. The boys just love it.

''With a few guys leaving at the end of the year it is exciting to be round them.''

Banks said the Highlanders were in a good place and had some exciting talent heading south, confirming Crusaders fullback Mitch Hunt would play for the franchise next year.

Banks will head back to Japan after the end of the Highlanders season, turning out for NTT Docomo Red Hurricanes in the Japan Cup.

''I will get to play a few games over there and hopefully get a break after a year and a-half of straight footy - have a little holiday, get a bit of a sun, need a tan. Put some weight on the legs which has not happened for 28-29 years.

''We are lucky to be playing rugby in a position we are... I love every minute of it. Dad played until he was 55, so I don't think I will go that long. Maybe mid-30s, though I'll probably look 50 by then. But Bender [Ben Smith] got there.

''I'd love to go back and play for Buller again. A couple of years ago we were trying to organise a game with my old man, three brothers, a couple of nephews... But I think I got an injury and it was around the Lions game so I couldn't play.

''But it would be cool to go back and play for a team which helped me out.''

As for the quarterfinal against the Crusaders on Friday night, the first five-eighth said the Highlanders would have to take their opportunities.

''You have got to be pretty clinical. Most teams in the finals - they are the guys that go pretty well. You either play well and have another Monday or you don't and you finish up.

''We are pretty determined to go up there and put on a good performance.''

The match will be refereed by Jaco Peyper in the newly renamed Orangetheory Stadium. Orangetheory Fitness is a United States fitness company.
