Promising Highlanders tighthead prop Tyrel Lomax may join the large group of players heading out the exit door at the end of the season.

Lomax, who will turn 23 on Saturday, has had an impressive season for the Highlanders, scrummaging well and making impact round the field.

His good form was rewarded with selection in the All Blacks foundation day squad. The South Island players named in the squad are set to assemble in Christchurch next Monday.

But Lomax is believed to be considering leaving the Highlanders. His partner has been offered a job in Wellington and Lomax may look at moving to the capital and joining the Hurricanes.

Lomax has links with the capital. He was born in Canberra but went to Wellington at a young age where he played rugby league. He is the son of former Kiwis captain John Lomax and still has family in the capital.

As a teenager, Tyrel Lomax moved back to Canberra and started playing the 15-man game. He made national age-grade sides but in 2017 threw his lot in with New Zealand.

The Highlanders signed him in September 2017 to play in 2019 as he had linked with the Rebels for the 2018 season.

But a few weeks later, the Rebels tore up the contract and Lomax ended up playing for Tasman in the Mitre 10 Cup in 2017. He joined the Highlanders in 2018.

He played 16 games last season and has missed just two games this season, as he is developing into a good prop.

The Highlanders are having a changing of the guard with the confirmed departures next year of seasoned players such as fullback Ben Smith, winger Waisake Naholo, loose forwards Liam Squire and Luke Whitelock and lock Jackson Hemopo.

The side has hung on to All Blacks Liam Coltman and Aaron Smith for next season and beyond.
