Powerful Highlanders side named

Departing Highlanders coach Tony Brown is firmly focused on what his side needs to do to get a win against the Sunwolves in Invercargill on Saturday.

That said, no doubt he will be an interested party in what the Tokyo-based opposition brings to the game.

He will link up with Japan head coach and his predecessor at the Highlanders, Jamie Joseph, at the end of the season to assist with the Cherry Blossoms.

''For me I'm just 100% committed to make sure the Highlanders perform as well as they can against a pretty good Sunwolves team,'' Brown said when he was asked if he had an eye on both camps this week.

To underscore the point, he has named a powerful squad for the match most will be expecting the home team to win comfortably.

All Black winger Waisake Naholo returns to the line-up, as expected. He has been sidelined since injuring his hamstring against the Blues on March 11.

The 25-year-old speedster had a run for Taranaki club side Spotswood at the weekend and will add pace to an exciting backline which also features the dangerous Tevita Li and All Black fullback Ben Smith.

''It is good to have Waisake back. Hopefully, we can get him enough ball so that he can do his thing.''

All Black midfielder Malakai Fekitoa will move in one spot into second five-eighth in the absence of Richard Buckman. Buckman has an Achilles strain which will sideline him for a week.

Buckman's absence has provided Matt Faddes with an opportunity to pull on the No 13 jersey, his best position.

And with Aaron Smith and Marty Banks teaming up in the 9-10 role, the Highlanders boast a potent backline capable of delivering a more cohesive display on attack.

''If we get enough ball, and good ball, then hopefully we can score some tries,'' Brown said.

''But there is a lot of hard work to do before you can score those tries.''

Some of that work will be done by the imposing loose forward unit of Liam Squire, Elliot Dixon and Luke Whitelock.

Squire, who earlier this week signed for both the Highlanders and New Zealand Rugby for two more years, earns a starting spot.

Dixon shifts to openside at the expense of the hardworking Dillon Hunt, who drops out of the game-day squad.

The trio will be tested as the Sunwolves like to play the game at pace. They will look to former Highlanders halfback Fumiaki Tanaka to recycle the ball rapidly and then spread it wide with haste.

''Playing Dicko [Dixon] at No 7 will give him an opportunity there. We feel as though, if he can perform there, we have three real powerful loose forwards and, hopefully, that is something that is going to work well for us on Saturday and going forward.''

In other changes, lock Joe Wheeler gets the start ahead of Tom Franklin, while Siate Tokolahi gets the nod ahead of Siosuia Halanukonuka in the front row.

Young Otago trio Josh Renton, Tei Walden and Sio Tomkinson have been named on the bench.

Hooker Ash Dixon is close to a return and may be available to play club rugby this weekend. Loose forward Dan Pryor is ''probably a couple of weeks away from club rugby''.
