When you talk to David Latta about Ranfurly Shield challenges, the conversation inevitably leads to one moment.

You do not want to raise it, but he knows it is coming.

That penalty in 1994, that call from Colin Hawke, who ruled Latta was offside in a ruck, handing Canterbury the opportunity to kick the goal and win a game that for so long Otago looked like winning to end its long shield drought.

"I get reminded about it all the time. It is part of the history of the game. I would like to think that with my coaching career I can do something that will make people forget about that moment," Latta said.

Latta, now the assistant coach of Otago, can get his redemption on Saturday as Otago challenges Southland in Invercargill for the Ranfurly Shield.

But it is not going to be easy.

Otago will have to improve significantly if it hopes to lift the Log o' Wood, after it started its season with a disappointing 29-13 loss to Counties-Manukau on Saturday, while Southland beat Manawatu 37-23 earlier in the day.

Latta said he found it frustrating watching in the coaches' box on Saturday, knowing the team was capable of playing better.

"I don't think we can totally ignore what happened. But we must learn from our errors, move on and make sure they do not happen again.

"It is about going out there and fronting up and the result will take care of itself. We've got to get out there, work hard in training and get our confidence back."

Otago's performance on Saturday was blighted by basic errors, which Latta said were fixable.

"I've never seen anything broken that stays that way on a rugby field. We need to review the game, and that is a key part of it, and that started on Saturday night. We had a few honesty calls, everyone looking at themselves, and what they could do better."

He felt the side had the ability to bounce back and put on a good show against Southland.

Winning the shield would be great, he said, but first it was about working hard in training and getting that right.

Latta said the first round of the ITM Cup showed that any side could beat another and sides had to be on top of their game to win.

"You've got to take the chances when they are on offer. We did not take those on the weekend. We had three or four chances and it didn't happen and then they got their tails up. That is where the momentum went."

Southland will undoubtedly be a tough opponent, having made the semifinals in the past couple of years, and will not want to lose the shield to its northern neighbour.

"We are going to be doing everything we can to get prepared for the game. The guys are in a good frame of mind and are in good shape."
