All Black and Highlanders hooker Andrew Hore turned up in Arrowtown on Saturday to help his club side, Maniototo, defeat the home side 34-29 in the White Horse Cup.

It was a coup for club rugby to have an All Black in its midst but the question remains whether the classy rake had permission to take the field.

The Highlanders are on a bye week and calls to management were not returned yesterday.

However, last week Highlanders operations manager Greg O'Brien told the Otago Daily Times only two Highlanders, centre Siale Piutau and fullback Kurt Baker, had been cleared to play club rugby in the weekend.

And Maniototo club president Paul Dougherty also squashed suggestions Hore and loose forward James Haskell might play in the White Horse Cup fixture.

Highlanders coach Jamie Joseph was understood not to have given permission for regular Super 15 players to play club rugby.

But Arrowtown coach Hayden Finch said they had known since Friday Hore would play.

"He is a great club man; it was no problem whatsoever," Finch said.

"It's great that he still enjoys club rugby."
