You can never question Isla Pringle’s loyalty to the Otago Spirit.

Every week the stalwart forward packs up her car to make the four and a-half hour round trip from her home in Southland to Dunedin for trainings and games.

It gives her the best of both worlds - sharemilking with her partner in Hedgehope and working for environmental consultancy firm Dairy Green, while still chasing the rugby ball around.

That has been a five-year commitment split across two stints: she travelled from Balclutha - she hails from a farm in Clydevale - for two years in-between.

Not many people would be willing to put themselves through it, but Pringle takes it all in her stride.

"I grew up watching Otago play and it was always a dream of mine," she said.

"My family have always supported me. I guess more recently my cousins, and neighbours, and all these people, get to watch me on TV and know that there’s a pathway and that’s really driven me to carry on.

"It’s cool now to have my little 5-year-old cousins come up and talk to me about it and know that it’s an opportunity.

"The next generation’s quite a big driver for me at the moment."

Pringle, 26, brought up her 50th cap for the Spirit earlier this season, a milestone that still catches her off-guard.

"Playing one game for Otago was pretty awesome, but playing 50, it’s unreal.

"It’s probably a long time coming.

"It’s been a bit of a commitment. Awesome to reflect and look at all the people that sort of helped you to get to that point."

The prop has played in a handful of Farah Palmer Cup finals in the past nine years, but none linger quite like the hurt of the 24-20 loss to Hawke’s Bay in 2022.

"That Balclutha final ... we should’ve won it."

Pringle and her team-mates get another shot at glory when they meet Northland in the Championship final tomorrow in a bid to be promoted to the top-tier Premiership.

They have learned plenty from past finals and the experienced spine needs to knuckle down to guide the newcomers through the big occasion.

Northland are known for their big pack up front - but that is no reason for the Spirit to shy away from their free-flowing game which gave them a 48-15 win earlier this season.

"We’re playing quite an expansive game so fitness is a big thing.

"But I guess also just fronting up. We also can run hard, and tackle hard.

"I think it’s really important that we still do our job up front. Meet them, don’t let them bully us and then let our backs do their awesome job that they’ve been doing all season."

The Spirit are unbeaten this season after six games and will host the final at Tahuna Park.

"It’s awesome to have worked so hard and got to where we are and now be able to reap the benefits, really.

"Looking forward to the support, and seeing all the people on the sideline, and playing for them as well, playing for our whole community."

Sheree Hume returns from a hand injury to start at first five, moving Abigail Paton back to halfback.

Georgia Cormick will add experience from off the bench.
