Rugby: Sideline scuffle hearing

A hearing will take place tonight into an incident at a schoolboy game which led to it being abandoned late last month.

The hearing will involve representatives from Telford Polytechnic and Otago Boys' High School after a match on July 28 at Bishopscourt, in Dunedin, ended in a sideline scuffle and the referee calling the game off 20 minutes into the second half.

A separate hearing will take place tonight after a coach from another Otago Boys' High School side was sent from the ground, also on July 28.

The game at Bishopscourt involved the Otago Boys' Third XV and the Telford Polytechnic team.

Otago Rugby Football Union operations manager Richard Perkins confirmed a hearing would take place but said details about the incident were still unclear and he did not want to prejudice the hearing.

Telford coach Ken Payne said there was a scuffle between players from both sides, which soon escalated.

A coach and a female spectator became involved in the melee and it is believed the woman was struck by a punch. It is unclear what injuries, if any, she suffered.

Payne said the referee felt there was no option but to call the game off. He was at the game and said there had been many differing versions of what had actually happened. He had written a report a day after the game which would be used at the hearing tonight.

Otago Boys' High School rugby administrator Brian Ashwin said he believed there was a scuffle near the sideline which spilled over on to the field.

The school had not disciplined anyone from the incident so far, Ashwin said. The Otago Boys' High School side was leading by 40 points at the time of the incident.

The coach of another Otago Boys' team will also face a judicial hearing tonight after he was sent from the ground when his team played John McGlashan College, also on July 28.

He was believed to have come on to the ground during the game and was sent away by the referee.
