All Black Ben Smith arrived back in Dunedin yesterday and rested at his home last night.

The Highlanders co-captain was discharged from a Sydney hospital yesterday and the medical staff said he could fly back to New Zealand.

The Highlanders management indicated he was unlikely to be readmitted to hospital in Dunedin.

Smith was very ill and is still recovering from his ordeal. He was not available for media interviews yesterday.

Highlanders coach Jamie Joseph will give an update on his condition at a media conference this afternoon.

It is still not known if Smith will be available to play against the Crusaders at Christchurch on Saturday. But it seems unlikely he will have recovered sufficiently to play in such a vital game.

Smith picked up the infection from a superficial graze to his leg the day before the Waratahs game.

He will be fully assessed by the Highlanders medical staff today before any decision is made about his fitness to play against the Crusaders.

If Smith does not play against the Crusaders it will be one of the rare occasions when injury or illness has kept him on the sideline in a Super rugby match.
