Mid-game power failure being investigated

North Harbour Stadium is investigating the incident that caused the power outage in the Super Rugby game between the Highlanders and Moana Pasifika on Saturday night.

A delay to the game was bad enough, but the fact it was not able to be televised when it eventually resumed was not a good look for the venue or the competition.

Stadium officials yesterday said the ‘‘unexpected power issue’’ affected one lighting tower, the stadium screen and Sky Sport’s power supply.

Play was eventually able to resume under reduced lighting, but broadcast coverage was unable to be restored.

Investigations had found no fault with stadium infrastructure or equipment, so further work was being undertaken to ‘‘determine the root cause of the failure’’.

At least the disruption did not affect the Highlanders too much as they held on to a bonus-point 39-19 win.

There could have been an unprecedented situation if the game was not able to be resumed.

‘‘It was a strange old night,’’ assistant coach Ben Smith said.

‘‘But at least they sorted it out so we could get back and play that last 20. I’m glad common sense prevailed.

‘‘We had enough light to keep going. There was no TMO in the last 20, but there was light to play with no real issues.’’
