Rugby: Southern beats Varsity A on day of upsets

Southern caused the major upset in Dunedin premier club rugby today when it beat University A 10-6 to regain the Cavanagh Trophy at the University Oval.

Sparkling first five-eighth Julius Glasson sped through a gap to sore a try after 16 minutes and halfback Joe Burford added the conversion and kicked a penalty goal in the second spell to give Southern the win.

Chris Noakes kicked two penalty goals to score all the students' points.

In the other upset Kaikorai beat Harbour 23-16 to lift the Speight's challenge Shield.

The students lead the Gallaway Trophy competition on 41 points and are followed by Dunedin 36, Southern 35, Alhambra-Union 35, Harbour 34, Pirates 24, Green Island 15, Zingari-Richmond 15, Kaikorai 15 and Taieri 12.

Glenn Dickson (Pirates) still leads the individual points scoring with 98 points and is followed by Chris Noakes (University A) 85, Peter Breen (Alhambra-Union) 79 and Cam Rutherford (Kaikorai) 78, Michael Witt (Taieri) 62, Jonnie Hughes (Harbour) 61.
