The Bay of Plenty player produced an eye-catching performance during the Highlanders 40-12 win against the Crusaders in a warm-up match in Oamaru on Thursday.
He made the most of his opportunity in the absence of All Black halfback Aaron Smith and Japanese international Fumiaki Tanaka, and has been named in a touring party of 25 players who will travel to South Africa to play the Kings in Port Elizabeth next Sunday morning (NZ time).
Toma will be joined by Manawatu halfback Jamie Booth, who had a solid game against the Crusaders.
Tanaka has a shoulder injury and was not considered for selection, while Smith has been promised the week off along with fellow All Blacks Ben Smith and Malakai Fekitoa.
The trio will join the Highlanders in Argentina for their match against the Jaguares on July 10, although Fekitoa is struggling with a cut to his face and a leg injury.
Uncapped first five-eighth Fletcher Smith has also been included in the group.
He has been in wonderful form for University A in club rugby.
He scored three tries in a 31-point haul against Pirates last weekend and is the competition's leading scorer with 213 points and joint leading try-scorer with 14.
Marty Banks is likely to get the starting spot at pivot, though.
In tricky conditions in Oamaru, Banks safely guided the Highlanders around the field.
Pirates prop Craig Millar has missed out but Green Island's Ross Geldenhuys gets an opportunity.
He has scored eight tries in Dunedin premier rugby and has been instrumental in Green Island's resurgence this season.
The squad will leave Dunedin early tomorrow morning, arriving in Johannesburg late on Sunday.
Two additional players will join the squad from the All Blacks following tonight's third test against Wales, possibly Liam Squire and Elliot Dixon.
The remaining All Black Highlanders will catch up with the team in Argentina.
Hooker Liam Coltman (foot) and lock Alex Ainley (calf) were not considered because of injury.
