The Otago Rugby Football Union has defended its decision to play schoolboy rugby outside Dunedin on test day.

Otago Boys' High School has questioned why four of its 12 teams have been drawn to play games out of town a week tomorrow, with the All Blacks playing Wales at Carisbrook that night.

The First XV plays Gore High School in Gore, the under-16 Blue team plays Upper Clutha in Wanaka, the under-15 White team plays West Otago in Lawrence and the under-14 division two team plays St Kevin's College at Oamaru.

"It is unfortunate," ORFU clubs and schools liaison officer Brett Compton said. "But the draw has been out since April 24 and schools have been given the option to play at another time."

Otago Boys' teacher in charge of rugby Neill Baker was disappointed four school sides had been drawn to play away on test day.

He felt all teams should play in Dunedin to attract people to the city and make it easier to go to the test.

"That was the way it used to happen," he said.

One of the school teams was playing at Wanaka at 1pm and there was no way the side could get back to Dunedin in time for the test.

Baker was aware the game could be moved to another day or an earlier time but that was inconvenient and the other school would have to agree.

He was to contact Mt Aspiring College to hopefully move the game.

Compton said the games could have been played at Queen's Birthday Weekend because no matches were scheduled.

There is also a two-week window during the second-term break when no games will be played.

"We tried to minimise out-of-town games on test day and other schools have made separate arrangements. There has to be compromise," Compton said.

Kaikorai Valley College's under-15 team was due to play Upper Clutha in Wanaka tomorrow week, but the Dunedin school knew the game would clash with the test so arranged to play during Queen's Birthday Weekend.

Kavanagh College Under-14 team was due to play Upper Clutha in Wanaka and has rescheduled the game for June 29.

"Our principal has agreed to the game being played in school time so both sides can watch the test," Kavanagh rugby administrator Shayne Flanagan said.

Taieri College has teams playing Waitaki Boys' High School in Oamaru but both games start at 11.15am, so getting back to Dunedin for the test is not an issue.
