There is change at the top of women's rugby in Dunedin, with defending champion Alhambra-Union eliminated in the semifinals on Saturday.
University gained an upset 23-8 win over Alhambra-Union.
The students led 18-0 at halftime. It was an impressive win by University against a side that had won the banner for the past four years.
Centre Chloe Trubshoe was in dynamic form and scored three of the students' tries. Halfback Rebecca Todd controlled play effectively and provided good ball for an exciting backline.
The students controlled the set pieces, with prop Beth Mallard having a strong game in the scrum. Captain Sam Stewart was a lively flanker.
The best Alhambra-Union forwards were No 8 Nicola Crawford and hooker Bobby Syme.
Pirates, the leader of the round-robin competition, beat Kaikorai 71-10.
It was a fitting tribute to veteran hooker Cherie Jackson, who was playing her 100th premier game for the club.
Pirates led 24-5 at the break and then put its foot on the throttle to score nine more tries in the second spell.
Pirates had complete control with prop Courtney Sullivan controlling the tight exchanges and Lauren Roney lively in the loose. The lineout was dominated by lock Kylie Cathro and No 8 Angie Sisisa scored two of the 13 tries.
The best Pirates back was Victoria Nafatali in the midfield, while winger Jamie Greene and centre Greer Muir both scored two tries.
Pirates will play University in the final this Saturday.
