Rugby: Way to go before Witt Otago ready

New signing Michael Witt shows promise but has a lot of work to do before he can claim a place in the Otago team.

Rugby league convert Witt (25) has not played rugby since his schoolboy days in Toowoomba and admitted being a bit rusty when he made his debut for Taieri at first five-eighth against Pirates on Saturday.

Witt was on target with his kicking and landed five goals from his five attempts, including a 50m penalty goal.

"It's something I pride myself on," he said.

"But I still have a lot of things to scrub up on in the game overall."

His display on Saturday indicates that Witt is not yet ready to step into the Otago team as a first five-eighth.

He has played little rugby and does not have the instinctive ability to react under pressure that comes from a long apprenticeship in the game.

But his long punting and goal kicking skills would be useful to an Otago team that has lacked consistent goal-kickers over recent years.

He may be better suited to a spot on the wing or at fullback.

Rugby league has been his game over the past seven years and he played for the Warriors in the NRL last year as a stand-off.

"It was exciting changing to rugby," he said.

"I'm happy with the decision I've made. I'm happy to be playing with the Taieri Eels."

He certainly had support from the 700-strong crowd of mostly Taieri fans that crowded the playing field at Hancock Park when Pirates beat Taieri 30-19.

Witt knows that there were problems on Saturday and things in his game he has to work on.

"We have to work on our phase play," he said.

"We were getting to one phase and then losing the ball.

We have a good bunch of guys with a good attitude and l'm sure we can fix it up."

He knows that his dream of playing for Otago is still in the future.

"That's a long way away. I'm just excited to be playing and hopefully we can get a few more wins under our belt at Taieri," he said.
