It is the last hit-out for the Otago players before the province looks to defend its title at the South Island sevens in Timaru next weekend.
Jury resisted stacking one team at the expense of the other and has split the talent evenly.
"I could have made one strong side but that would have meant some of our best players would have been on the sideline and they would not have had the same amount of game time," Jury said.
"For us, it is just about giving the boys a run."
Organisers hope the new tournament will become an annual fixture.
Jury is a fan of the taxing format which will see eight men’s teams and four women’s teams combining to play 22 games in one day.
"I think it is massively encouraging for the area. We don’t play enough sevens in the South Island. Sevens for men and women can be a fulltime job and so we have to be able to provide players in the South Island with playing opportunities. North Otago has recognised that."
Otago has some talented players with speedy winger Gavin Stark well-suited to sevens and former New Zealand under-20 player Leroy van Dam another who should shine.
Harbour winger Jerome Harimate has a great step and good acceleration, while Ben Tuiomanufili is a powerful man and will take some tackling when he carries the ball.
Sam Aitken has all the skills and has drawn comparisons with All Black Ben Smith.
"We have a pretty impressive skill set among this group but I suppose the big thing is now seeing how they go under pressure.
"We’ve been training for the last seven weeks and have been working really hard. But our expectations for this weekend are just to get all 22 players putting their hands up for selection. What I want them to do is nail their core roles and work hard off the ball."
Sevens is sport where players often launch their career, so the action, which gets under way with North Otago playing Sassenachs Blue at 11am, should prove entertaining.
