The fire still burns deep for Liam Squire. The 23-test All Black is back in the Highlanders, and looking to get back on the field.

Highlanders coach Tony Brown said he will be holding back Squire at the start of the season but Squire cannot wait to get out there.

It has been a hectic past 12 months for Squire, who left for Japan at the end of last season.

But he injured his troublesome knee early on in Japan and came back to New Zealand for surgery.

Then the lockdown hit and he decided to get a long-standing hip injury, which had been bothering him for years, operated on.

By the time that had been done, time had slipped by, along with the option to return to Japan.

"After getting that hip surgery and feeling well, there was a couple of other little things going on and I felt like I still had a bit left here in New Zealand," he said.

"Staying home and playing Super Rugby again is quite exciting. I feel refreshed again and I’ve sort of got my second wind."

He has been working at the Stonehenge property in Maniototo, part-owned by former All Black Andrew Hore.

He was confident his body would stand up to the rigours of Super Rugby.

"I have no doubt. This year has been tough but it has also given me a chance to get all the injuries taken care of. I’ve not had a chance to get a good preseason like this where I have been able to focus on what I need to strengthen.

"I’m heading in the right direction. Not quite 100% but definitely building and come the start of the season I’ll be right."

He had high standards which he wanted to reach and beyond.

As for wearing the black jersey again, it is still a goal.

"That dream is not over. It is something that burns in the back of my mind. I just do not look too far ahead."
