Ben McLachlan has come up short in a competitive showing in Melbourne.

Alongside British partner Luke Bambridge, the Queenstown tennis star was beaten 7-6 7-5 in his opening round match at the Australian Open.

Little separated the pair from 10th seeds Mate Pavic and Bruno Soares.

Just one break point was secured, by Pavic/Soares in the final game of the second set, which proved to be the difference.

Pavic/Soares now advance to play Kiwi Artem Sitak and Indian partner Divij Sharan in the second round.
