The Cooper’s Chase gang return for another entertaining, delightful and poignant instalment in Richard Osman’s best-selling Thursday Murder Club series — The Last Devil to Die (book 4).
When the shocking news arrives that an old friend in the antiques business has been murdered, and a mysterious package he was protecting has gone missing, Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron and Ibrahim and their police officer friends Chris and Donna set out to figure out the truth.
With dangerous criminals also on the hunt for the package, mayhem and a growing body count ensures plenty of action for the ageing, but still clever and fierce, Thursday Murder Club team.
As in the previous three novels in the Thursday Murder Club series, The Last Devil to Die is filled with cleverly drawn characters from across the spectrum — from moody criminals to secret super spies — and has plenty of laughs to ease the reader’s way through what becomes a nicely twisty mystery.
Richard Osman has understanding and compassion for older people, showing them at their sparkling best and empathising when they are struggling with the issues of ageing, from dodgy hips to dementia, and this adds an appealing depth to his novels.
Written in a witty and engaging style, The Last Devil to Die is perfect holiday reading fare.
For those who have not read the Thursday Murder Club mysteries, it is probably best to tackle them in order — The Thursday Murder Club, The Man Who Died Twice, The Bullet That Missed and The Last Devil to Die.
