Titan Cranes operations supervisor Ricky Manson lowers a new section of Port Otago's Kitchener St slipway lifting cradle into place yesterday.

Port Otago harbour services manager Allan Sutherland said the 17-tonne cradle, costing about $80,000, was lifted into place as planned.

It would be trialled for the first time next week, when a boat was due to be serviced.

The old cradle, which had been used since the 1970s, had become pitted and rusted.

The crane also moved the severed bow of the historic dredge Te Whaka, which was to become a sculpture.
