Springston dairy cattle breeder Ivan Robertson is this year's Canterbury A&P show legend.

The association gives the annual award to honour an individual for outstanding voluntary services and in recognition of their passion and commitment to the association and show.

Mr Robertson has been involved with the Canterbury A&P show all of his life.

As a young man, he farmed with his father Edgar at Cashmere.

The family then moved their farming operation to Springston, where he started showing Holstein Friesian cattle in his own right under the stud name Matawal.

He won champion Holstein Friesian cow and supreme champion cow in 2000, and champion Holstein Friesian cow in 2001.

Show organisers said the ''very popular'' steward of the cattle section had the ability to move things along without ''ruffling too many feathers'' and always managed to ''sort out the parents'' for the children entered in the calf classes.
