Growers holding back wool

Prices continued to slide for all wool types at the South Island wool sale in Christchurch yesterday, prompting growers to reserve wool.

There was a very good offering of pre-lamb crossbred fleece, quoted up to 5% cheaper in a week, Roger Fuller, of Elders Primary Wool, said.

The situation continued to concern everyone in the industry with "no short-term fix", Mr Fuller said.

Mid-micron wool, on a limited offering, showed some positive signs, as did lamb's wool.

With larger weights to come forward, August would be a testing month for brokers and exporters as to where prices would find their level, he said.

Dave Burridge, of PGG Wrightson Wool, said there were strong signals from growers unprepared to meet newly adjusted levels, resulting in a 55% pass rate.

Buyers held back, reluctant to take further stock positions in absence of firm buying orders from customers, Mr Burridge said.

Good style fleece (31-35 micron) was down 3%-5% on the previous sale, with an average clean price of 450c/kg, while good style full-length crossbred fleece (35 to 39 micron) dropped 4%-7% at 380c.
