Real Journeys buys retreat

The Stewart Island Lodge, which has been bought by Queenstown-based tourism company Real Journeys.

Tourism company Real Journeys has added retreat-style accommodation on Stewart Island to its list of assets.

The southern South Island-based company, which runs TSS Earnslaw, overnight cruises at Milford and Doubtful Sounds and scenic flights among other operations, has bought Stewart Island Lodge for an undisclosed sum and will take possession on July 31.

Real Journeys chief executive Dave Hawkey said the purchase was an important step for the company - which also operates on the island as Stewart Island Experience - as it marked its debut in the land-based accommodation sector.

The company has also bought land adjoining the lodge for future accommodation development.
