Mr Broughton (35) was announced on Thursday as the Otago-Southland Emerging Director by Otago-Branch institute chairman Geoff Thomas.
"Jeffrey stood out as someone with a strong commitment to proactive professional development and understood the importance of lifelong learning," Mr Thomas said.
"He recognises good governance as being the foundation of great organisations and has a real drive to grow his capability as a director."
In an interview yesterday, Mr Broughton said it was very humbling to win the award against some high-quality candidates.
He was excited by the areas it opened up for his career, such as mentoring from senior directors within the institute.
Mr Broughton had been building up his experience as a director and using his audit background to understand best-practice governance. Mr Broughton had followed on from his father, Philip Broughton, in becoming involved in the Maori Business Network, which operated in Dunedin, Queenstown and Invercargill. As a associate director of Ngai Tahu, Mr Broughton helped oversee an operation comprising 100,000ha of land, including dairy and beef farms in Canterbury, a high-country station near Queenstown and forestry on the West Coast.
He is a director of Kati Huirapa Runaka ki Puketeraki and Puketeraki Ltd.
The prize included $1500 towards an institute director development course, complimentary membership of the institute for one year and complimentary attendance at four Otago-Southland branch events. Mr Thomas said shared experiences were how everyone grew and the mentoring was a key reward from his win.
Motor Trade Finance treasury and strategy manager and Otago Rugby Football Union director Rowena Davenport was runner-up.
