A cyclist was taken to hospital after running a red light and colliding with a car in Dunedin yesterday afternoon.

Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen, of Dunedin, said the cyclist was riding north in George St when he failed to stop at the Hanover St lights and collided with a car.

The man was taken to hospital with a sore head and a small cut, Snr Sgt Dinnissen said.

Also reported to police yesterday was a man having a "cook-up" in the bushes near Tomahawk Rd, which started a small fire.

"A male was located having a cookup in the bushes there having set some of the trees there on fire."

Across town in Kew, a suspicious man was reported getting out of a vehicle wielding a baseball bat and appearing aggressive, but he was not found by officers.

Yesterday going down (crawling) on the oneway north caught in traffic, I observed only 2 cyclists; one cycling up the cycle path the wrong way (going south) and a block later, another cycling the same way but this time on the footpath meaning pedestrians where fair game. Beyond me why those 2 could not use the cycle lane on the oneway south, maybe those lanes were busy, not....

Hope the cyclist is ok and recovers real quick to pay the fine for running a red light and for the damages to the car
