A Dunedin community choir will celebrate its 10th anniversary next Saturday with a special performance charting the past decade of popular music.

Dunedin residents Sandra Buchanan and Dinah Cameron founded the Dunedin Rock Choir in July 2016 for people interested in singing but who did not necessarily want to join a more formal, traditional choir.

The group meets every Thursday at St Peter’s Church Hall, South Dunedin.

Their first rehearsal attracted just shy of 40 people, but their numbers have grown over the years to as many as 70.

Ms Buchanan likened the group’s growth over the past decade to being a parent.

‘‘We had a baby, and we’re amazed how the baby’s grown up to be this wonderful, flourishing child,’’ she said.

The group is holding a special performance at Tūhura Otago Museum next Saturday to commemorate its 10th anniversary.

They would be performing songs by artists including Radiohead, Steppenwolf, System of a Down, Coldplay, Amy Winehouse, Six60 and Chappell Roan.

Ms Buchanan said the choir did not strictly perform rock music, despite the name.

‘‘We do everything from Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Eagles, to more modern stuff like Adele, Lewis Capaldi.’’

The choir still had five of its original members.

A quarter of the singers were men.

One of the reasons the group had been so successful was that there were no auditions, Ms Buchanan said.

‘‘You don’t have to come every week and it’s tremendously good fun.’’

They also only charged a $5 cash fee — the same price as it had been for the past 10 years.

Next Saturday’s performance starts at 1pm.
