While swimming at Porpoise Bay in the Catlins on Saturday, Dunedin woman Kirsten Lloyd did not expect she would be faced with getting hit by a dolphin.

Spotting some Hector’s dolphins from the shore, she went into the water with her husband, but did not expect the dolphins to come so close.

"They cruised in on perfectly formed waves and began looping closely around us," Mrs Lloyd said.
