Dunedin’s city centre was already at a near standstill yesterday afternoon as shops shut and traffic thinned out as last night’s lockdown deadline loomed.

Queues formed at some large stores through the day as many shoppers tried to shore up their non-essential supplies, but the streets were emptying out yesterday afternoon ahead of the shutdown accompanying Covid-19 alert Level 4 — now in effect — which will last at least four weeks.

The shutdown is designed to eliminate the virus, prevent widespread outbreaks, and possibly save thousands of lives in New Zealand.

Reporters around the South noted quiet streets in the centres of Invercargill, Queenstown and Alexandra yesterday evening.

Next 4 weeks is the perfect time for DCC to try the octagon shutdown.

Best laugh I have had in a long time, Cheers!

Hey Mr Mayor, you still think Global Warming and Climate Change are the existential threat to our existence? Might want to take DISASTER PREPARDNESS a little more seriously when this is over and prioritise money and efforts on that Vs climate change!
