There was a time when the undisputed best sports game series crown was contested by football heavyweights Fifa and Pro Evo, gridiron powerhouse Madden, and peerless basketball title NBA 2K. But The Show is now, well, the best show in town.

There really is no weakness with the extraordinary baseball series, which surely provides the most authentic representation of sport we have seen on a console.

It just oozes life and passion. Baseball is not a game that has massive currency in New Zealand, though it has some devout fans, but you can easily transport yourself to Fenway Park or into the shoes of Shohei Ohtani through playing the video game.

And it’s so playable. No sports game gives you as much control over how you play, or how much you want to be challenged.

There is also immense variety as the game modes offer a mix of realistic simulation and sheer fun.

New this year is a really well done — and historically important — mode called Storylines, where you relive the glory days of the Negro League, the remarkable travelling show that allowed black players wrongly barred from the Major Leagues to strut their stuff.

The Show sets the standard for sport again and somehow keeps getting better.

Our journalists are your neighbours

We are the South's eyes and ears in crucial council meetings, at court hearings, on the sidelines of sporting events and on the frontline of breaking news.

As our region faces uncharted waters in the wake of a global pandemic, Otago Daily Times continues to bring you local stories that matter.

We employ local journalists and photographers to tell your stories, as other outlets cut local coverage in favour of stories told out of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

You can help us continue to bring you local news you can trust by becoming a supporter.
