CD Reviews: Elbow

Northern England quintet Elbow's sixth album (and six years on from breakthough hit One Day Like This) is a curious blend of the workmanlike and, occasionally, wondrous.

The latter arrives when singer Guy Garvey leads (or follows?) his crew into territories bordering on prog-rock, though more in the Syd Barrett kaleidoscopic vein than the time signature mash-ups and heavy riffery of say, Primus.

Early tracks Charge and Fly Boy Blue + Lunette, with their dark/warm keyboards and almost claustrophobic vibe, are fine examples of tension-and-release rock, yet their twists and turns are underdone a little by the less inspired New York Morning and Real Life.
