CD reviews: Ane Brun

Norwegian Grammy Award-winning artist Ane Brun’s new album might comprise 14 covers, yet her seventh studio release nevertheless serves as a highly personal offering.

Brun’s music has never been far removed from insights into notions of romance and, on this ode to a new love, she fulfills the promise of its title, Leave Me Breathless, offering spare, intimate versions of a wide range of material, from Foreigner’s I Want To Know What Love Is, to The Righteous Brothers’ Unchained Melody, to Nick Cave’s glorious Into My Arms and Bob Dylan’s Girl From the North Country.

In other hands, this could have been saccharine; Brun, thankfully, goes for the understated.
