CD reviews: LCD Soundsystem

‘‘Good gracious/ I sound like my mom’’ is hardly the sort of pronouncement you’d expect from New York’s hippest dance-punk crew, yet this self-effacement has been the bedrock of LCD Soundsystem’s career for over a decade.

On American Dream James Murphy and company return with an album awash with melancholy ruminations on ageing, spliced with their trademark rough-hewn hipster-baiting — tonite, I Used To and Change Yr Mind are illustrative of this winning formula, as Murphy giddily guides us through his record collection (Berlin-era Bowie, Eno-helmed Talking Heads), all the while peeking pensively over his shoulder.
