CD reviews: The Kite String Tangle

The debut album from The Kite String Tangle, aka producer/songwriter/singer Danny Harley, is an intriguing mix of seemingly off-the-cuff (actually, cleverly edited) electronica.

Full of glitches, rhythmic pulses and synthesiser washes, it is frustrating, too, as Harley occasionally turns his apparent skills towards by-the-numbers dancefloor grooves and all-too-obvious harmonic structures (Mistakes to Make).

Mixed by Grammy Award-winning engineer Eric J. Dubowsky (Flume, SAFIA), the self-released effort has some strong points, including the slow, dark burn of Fickle Gods and the angular, soul-infused The Prize (featuring guest vocalist Bridgette Amofah).

  • The Kite String Tangle. Self-titled. Exist.
  • Three stars (out of five)
