Tonight's the night for sports personalities-turned-ballroom dancers Monty Betham and Temepara George, but Dunedin experts say it is too hard to pick who will win the final of Dancing With The Stars.

The two sporting stars square off tonight in the final of the TV One show, which will also feature performances by all the 2008 contestants, theatre star Rob Guest and the Candy Lane Dancers.

Dunedin dance teacher John Gardener said he would not like to predict the winner, especially after Betham, partnered by Nerida Jantti, came out so strongly on last week's show.

"Then again, he does not have the grace Temepara has got. It'll be very, very interesting.''
George also had the added advantage of partner Stefano Olivieri's big smile and his winning background, Mr Gardener said.

"Monty could really pull it out of the hat. He let himself go big time last week.''

A fan of the show, he enjoyed the judges' repartee, although he did not always agree with everything they told the dancers.

He was unsure any of the stars would make it on the ballroom dance competition circuit, given judges in real life did not look at competitors whose footwork was not perfect or whose top line was not right.

However, for all that, the programme had given people a more "if they can do it, I can do it'' attitude, especially young teenagers, Mr Gardener said.

Adjudicator and dance teacher Vivienne Brooks was also a keen watcher of the show. She preferred not to say who she thought would win, as "it could go either way''.

"At this stage, they have both improved but Monty's improvement from the time before was huge.''

Admitting to automatically judging the dancers while watching the show, the best advice she could give was for them to "go for it and do the best they can''.

Both dancers' sporting backgrounds - George as a netballer and Betham as a former league player and boxer - had also given them an advantage, she said.

Dance teacher Donna Ryalls, who did not see last week's episode, has picked George to win but believed the person who should have won - Miriama Smith - was voted off last week.

"It needs to be more about the dancing than how popular and famous they are.''

Previous winners are Suzanne Paul and Stefano Olivieri, Lorraine Downes and Aaron Gilmore, and Norm Hewitt and Carol-Ann Hickmore.
