We are delighted to present Wellington pianist Jian Lu performing Rachmaninov’s second piano concerto. Also on the programme is Tchaikovsky’s fourth symphony. The music would sweep the listener along on their emotional roller-coaster journeys: pain and despair at one extreme, soaring ecstasy at the other – traits typical of the Russian late-Romantic tradition.

The Concerto is also said to depict Rachmaninov’s own life story with compelling honesty, and its endlessly flowing lyricism has helped to make it one of the best-loved piano concertos. Wellington-based pianist Jian Liu makes his début performance with the DSO. His playing has been described as “passionate, articulate, deeply expressive, and wholly musical’.

Simon Over, the orchestra’s London-based Principal Guest Conductor, returns to conduct this powerful all-Russian programme.
