Dunedin Symphony Orchestra’s ‘Sibelius & Prokofiev’

Marc Taddei Conductor

Ilya Gringolts Violin

‘..One of the most inspirational violinists today…’ Financial Times

To celebrate NZ Music Month, our first concert at the Dunedin Town Hall starts with Luminous by leading NZ composer John Psathas.

Russian violinist Ilya Gringolts, a 2017 Michael Hill International Violin Competition jury member, is internationally renowned for his extremely virtuosic playing and sensitive interpretations. He is described as ‘one of the most inspirational violinists today’ by the Financial Times. Conducting will be Marc Taddei, currently Music Director for both Orchestra Wellington and California’s Vallejo Symphony Orchestra.

Prokofiev’s Violin concerto to be performed by Ilya Gingolts contains his trade-mark sunlit melodies, harmonic shifts, and angular writing. Sibelius’ symphony is one of his best-loved works. Its turmoil and triumph are thought to depict Finland’s struggle for independence.
