Time again to go wild with food

The 11th annual Monteith's Beer and Wild Food Challenge begins in the South Island next month.

Restaurants have to create a dish or dishes from "wild" food and match it with a Monteith's beer.

Wild food is defined as anything that is not usually raised on a farm and includes fish and seafood, venison, rabbit, duck, wild boar, and various indigenous herbs.

New to the competition this year is Monteith's New Zealand Lager, which won best lager at the 2007 International Beer Challenge.

It joins Monteith's traditional brews as possibilities for matching with wild dishes this year.

Restaurants and bars can enter formal or informal categories and there are prizes for best spirit and service as well as best beer and food matches.

About 120 eateries around the country are entering this year.

Otago entrants are:
In Dunedin: Craft Bar, High Tide Waterfront Restaurant, Relish Restaurant (Mercure Hotel), Ombrellos, Ports O'Call Bar & Grill (Southern Cross Hotel), Princes on Dowling Restaurant, The Palms Restaurant, Alibi, Barakah Bar & Tapas, and Cableways Tavern.
