Michelia Lemon Fragrant.
A cross between Michelia yunnanensis and Bubbles, it forms a shapely 3m tree with lemon-scented white flowers emerging from furry brown buds in spring.
Like rhododendrons, michelias prefer a rich, acidic soil with plenty of organic matter.
They tolerate light frosts (approximately -5degC) and do best in sun or light shade but need protection from cold winds.
Stake well until established and provide plenty of mulch to prevent the roots drying out during the summer months.
A light prune after flowering keeps the tree compact and in shape.
Michelia Lemon Fragrant is available from Blueskin Nurseries, Waitati.
