Prof Skegg is a former Rhodes Scholar who was knighted for his services to the advancement of medicine, and chaired the Otago preventive and social medicine department for many years.
In its doctorate citation, Queen’s University said he was internationally recognised for his research on epidemiology, breast and cervical cancer, contraception, drug safety and reproductive health.
Queen’s also said he was the primary driving force in establishing the Matariki Network of Universities.
This network includes Otago and Queen’s, as well as universities in England, the US, and Australia that promote excellence in research-led education.
