About 2000 first-year students filled the Dunedin Town Hall for their first lecture yesterday.

While no notes were taken and they will not be examined on its content, it was full of useful information.

The Otago University Students Association organised a Unismart lecture again this year, using a unique style of presentation to deliver its message.

Presenter Dan Bain stripped, juggled, acted and laughed his way through his talk on the roller coaster ride of adjustment to a tertiary study lifestyle.

With a realistic approach to issues they might be facing, he encouraged them to most of all seek help for any issues they were facing or would face in the future.

To combat problems with independent study, attending tutorials and asking questions were both recommended.

Approaching the OUSA and seeking either grants or scholarships were worth considering as possible avenues for ensuring enough cash for the year, he said.

If the transition into tertiary life became too much, he advised the students to seek counselling and advice.

To help avoid any run-ins with the police, he asked them to respect other people's property.

Finally, to make sure everyone got along and had friends, he asked them to remember people were much the same and were all experiencing excitement, confusion and fear over their new tertiary experience.
