What do you get when you combine a fast-moving yellow cow, a sea horse and a lively caterpillar?

You end up with a touring Australian puppet show that is based on the popular children’s book The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

The show will be performed three times at Dunedin’s Regent Theatre today. The first two shows  will be staged at 10am and noon.

They will be followed at 3pm by a special "relaxed" performance, suitable for children with autism or other special needs. Two more shows, at 10am and noon, will be staged tomorrow at the same venue.

The show is an adventure in the world of United States author and illustrator Eric Carle. Audiences are transported into a giant pop-up book filled with amazing characters, including a big red crocodile, an underwater world filled with sea creatures, and the show’s hero, The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Producer Michael Sieders has family links with Dunedin and has visited the city before. He is pleased to be bringing the show to New Zealand for the first time.

Theatre could sometimes be a "daunting" experience for youngsters but the show, including this afternoon’s relaxed performance, aimed to help break down barriers and provide access to the fun and enjoyment of live theatre, Mr Sieders said.
