People dressed up in crazy costumes, flinging their arms around in a parody of a Highland fling, drew a crowd of bemused bystanders in the Octagon, Dunedin, yesterday.

It was all for fun and a good cause - the Cure Kids $10 Challenge.

The 17 competitors in teams of two from around the country arrived in Dunedin from Queenstown yesterday afternoon ready to tackle two challenges - the first, a scavenger hunt for 10 items such as an issue of Critic, a burnt piece of toast and a declined eftpos receipt, and the second a Highland fling-off.

Cure Kids brand and business development general manager Carolyn Hobson said they had turned the challenge around this year, with competitors travelling from Queenstown to Auckland instead of Auckland to Queenstown.

The teams had to raise $7000 to take part.

Christchurch's Hellraisers' team raised a record $66,000.

The idea was to remind people of the challenges children with life-threatening illness faced on a daily basis, she said.

The competitors had no idea where they were going next or what challenges they would face.

Yesterday the competitors, who were travelling in convoy, also stopped in Lawrence where they sang the national anthem with help from the town's school pupils, she said.
