More than 60 recruits set to join the Royal New Zealand Police College over the next year will be bound for the South.

As part of the Government’s pledge to increase police numbers across the country by 1800 staff, over the next 12 months between 60 and 70 Southern district-bound recruits will start at the college.

A police spokeswoman said recruit numbers were determined to enable districts to grow in line with the 1800 growth plan, and to replace employees who left during the year.

"Therefore, final recruitment numbers are confirmed prior to each wing."

At the end of the 2020-21 financial year, the Southern district was seven officers under target strength.

Police were recruiting for all three areas across the district, and each training wing would have a different split between locations.

According to the Police 2020 annual report, Southern had 584 full-time constabulary staff, compared with 561 the year before.
