The competition was ''fierce'' at the Otago Mathematics Association's O'MAthalon yesterday.
O'MAthalon co-ordinator Ainslie Anderson said about 700 pupils, between years 5 and 10, competed at the Edgar Centre yesterday.
For the competition, a pupil was given a question, ran a circuit to their team waiting to solve it, and then the pupil ran back with the answer.
If the answer was correct, they were given another question to repeat the process, she said.
A competition round lasted 30 minutes and the team with the most correct answers won, she said.
The competition was ''fierce'' yesterday and some teams answered all the questions with minutes to spare, she said.
''It's crazy. They have specialist runners and they are zooming around the Edgar Centre as fast as they can - laughing and screaming - it's all go.''
Most pupils were from Dunedin but some travelled from Lawrence to compete.
On Monday night, about 300 pupils, between years 11 and 13, competed at Logan Park High School.
A competition section had pupils matching photos of mathematicians to their theories.
