Six people standing around a crashed vehicle early in the morning tried to convince officers they had just come across the crash, police say.
Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said police were called to Great King St at 2.25am yesterday after reports a Nissan motor vehicle had crashed into a parking meter.
When police arrived, six people were standing around the car. All said they had just stumbled upon the crash, Snr Sgt Bond said.
However, police did not buy their story and believed the six were in the car at the time, he said.
The driver was nowhere to be found and had still to be located.
Police were making inquiries with the registered owner of the vehicle.
