A Dunedin man is in custody and a gun has been seized following an Armed Offenders Squad callout near Evansdale which caused major holiday traffic delays last night.

Senior Sergeant Brian Benn, of Dunedin, said the 53-year-old man had been driving from Ashburton when he was stopped by the Armed Offenders Squad between Evansdale and Waitati about 5.30pm.

The man allegedly intended to go to a Dunedin address.

Snr Sgt Benn said police officers from stations between Oamaru and Dunedin were involved in the pursuit.

State Highway 1 was closed between Waitati and Evansdale for about 20 minutes to protect the public, and traffic was backed up for several kilometres in each direction while the Armed Offenders Squad apprehended the man.

Snr Sgt Benn said the man was charged with breaching a protection order and unlawful possession of a firearm.

He will appear in the Dunedin District Court this morning.
