A smiley baby and ‘‘spectacular’’ backdrop were the inspiration behind The Star’s Family Holiday Photo Competition’s winning snap.

Ashley Mountfort, of Dunedin, captured a photo of her 5-month-old daughter Ruth lying on the grass at Tunnel Beach earlier this month.

They were there with some of Mrs Mountfort’s family who were visiting from Michigan, in the United States of America.

Mrs Mountfort had been carrying Ruth in a frontpack and put her down to play on the grass.

‘‘She was just really smiley with the nice backdrop.’’

Mrs Mountfort captured at the moment and entered it into the competition, at her friend’s suggestion.

‘‘I just love taking photos of my kids.’’

Her family, which was in Dunedin for three days as part of a two-week trip around the country, thought Tunnel Beach was ‘‘spectacular’’.

‘‘They loved Dunedin. They’ve definitely got a lot of ideas for when they come back.’’

Mrs Mountfort won a voucher from The Photo Gallery.

Peter Dick’s photo of his wife and children about to get splashed by a wave in St Clair was second, and Sarah Rhodes’ photo of 13-year-old Anya on a rope swing was third.

The photo competition was judged by Allied Press illustrations editor Stephen Jaquiery.
