Bag snatch in central Dunedin

A woman had her bag snatched in central Dunedin yesterday, prompting an appeal by police.

Police were called to Countdown supermarket in central Dunedin just before 6pm, following reports a woman had her handbag snatched while loading groceries into her vehicle, Sergeant Matt Scoles said.

The woman fought to hang on to her bag and was dragged to the ground in the process. The male and female attackers then got into a vehicle and fled.

The car, described as a red/maroon/brown 1995 Honda Accord, was later involved in an incident in the car park of Cableways Tavern in Kaikorai Valley, he said. The offenders were spotted stealing alcohol from a car in the car park, and when disturbed drove into two cars, damaging the front bumpers.

Police received several complaints about the way the vehicle was being driven between the tavern and York Pl, but patrols were unable to find the car, he said.

The bag-snatch victim suffered minor abrasions and managed to retain her wallet after it fell out of the handbag during the struggle, he said.

Police were seeking witnesses to either incident, particularly any sightings of the vehicle, which was now missing its front bumper.
