A wooden park bench stolen from the Dunedin Botanic Garden has been recovered - not that anyone knew it was missing.
Senior Sergeant Bruce Ross, of Dunedin, said the bench was recovered from the roof of a Moray Pl apartment yesterday after being discovered by the landlord.
Earlier this month, a park bench went missing from the Mediterranean garden, which was opened on December 12 by the Governor-General, Sir Anand Satyanand.
The wooden seat, worth $1500, was one of seven hardwood seats donated to the Mediterranean garden.
However, collections supervisor Barbara Wheeler said the recovered bench was not the one missing - in fact, staff did not know it was missing.
"That was a nice surprise for us, getting something back we didn't know was gone."
It was believed the bench was taken from the Winter Garden more than a year ago, and it would be reinstated after being re-stained.
