A brilliant Indian summer will visit Dunedin this weekend.

The Natyaloka School of Indian Classical Dance will present its second annual recital of Bharathanatyam dance, Maaya, in the Dunedin Teachers College auditorium on Sunday.

''Bharathanatyam is one of the eight classical Indian dance forms. It's known for its precise footwork, hand gestures and facial expressions.

There is not a part of the body that is not used, including your eyebrows,'' choreographer Swaroopa Unni said earlier this week.

The hour-long performance would feature ancient Hindu mythological stories, the choreographer said, opening with a procession for Goddess Lakshmi and travelling back to the times of Lord Krishna.

''The dancers are like storytellers on stage, telling stories from old mythology. It's going to be magical.''

Mrs Unni went on ''a shopping trip to India'' in June to source 14 authentic Indian costumes and jewellery for the production.
