Bike Wise Battle brings staff on to streets

February is Bike Wise Month - which means it is time again for the annual Bike Wise Battle.

Funded by the New Zealand Transport Agency, the Ministry of Health, and Sport and Recreation New Zealand, the Bike Wise Battle is a free challenge, where similar-sized organisations compete to get the highest percentage of staff on their bikes at least once during the month.

Participants only need to cycle a minimum of 2km or 10 minutes, and can do it anywhere and anytime they feel like it.

Dunedin City Council safe and sustainable travel co-ordinator Charlotte Flaherty said the battle was about helping people see cycling as a viable and enjoyable way to get to work.

‘‘Most participants take part to support their workmates but many find they really like it and keep biking after the Bike Wise Battle is over,'' she said.

‘‘They discover that cycling often takes less time than driving and eradicates hassles such as traffic, parking and paying for petrol.''

Ms Flaherty said employees who biked to work arrived alert and ‘‘ready to go''.
